Gary Edward Hurlbut, 70 of Sylvan Grove, Kansas died Friday, February 21, 2014 at Lincoln Park Manor in Lincoln, Kansas.

Gary was born February 19, 1944 in Gainesville, Texas one of three sons born to Dale and Leota (Allison) Hurlbut.  As a child, his family moved to Sylvan Grove where he attended schools.  He graduated from Sylvan Grove High School in the Class of ’62 and then attended one year at Ft. Hays State University.

Gary served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard for four years.

Gary was united in marriage to Nancy Williams on October 22, 1965 in Lincoln, Kansas.  This union was blessed with three children; Troy, Shelley and Angela.  They lived in Maryland, Texas and Virginia before moving back to Sylvan Grove.

 Gary was a farmer and rancher most all of his life.  When he was younger he worked as a carpenter, he worked at the Sylvan Machine Shop and he also built Butler sheds and bens with his brother.  He was also a volunteer for the Sylvan Grove Fire Department.  He loved the outdoors whether he was tending his cattle, hunting and fishing, camping with family and friends, water skiing at Wilson Lake or doing tractor pulls at local fairs.  He was a man with a great sense of humor who enjoyed playing poker and spending time with his family and friends.

Gary’s surviving family include his wife of 47 years, Nancy of the home; son, Troy Hurlbut of Bunker Hill, Kansas; daughters, Shelley Price (Todd) of Russell, Kansas and Angela Edmundson (Todd) of Sylvan Grove, Kansas; mother, Leota Hurlbut of Sylvan Grove, Kansas; brothers, Ronnie Hurlbut of Sylvan Grove, Kansas and Darrell Hurlbut of Macks Creek, Missouri; and two grandsons, Austin Price and Caleb Price.  He was preceded in death by his father.

Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at the Presbyterian Church in Sylvan Grove.  Burial will follow at the Sylvan Grove City Cemetery where military rites will be conducted.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to Service time on Tuesday at the Church.  A Memorial has been established as the Gary Hurlbut Memorial Fund.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, who is in charge of these arrangements.
