Melvin Edward Meier, 84, of Dorrance, Kansas, died on Wednesday, January 08, 2014, at the Salina Regional Hospital in Salina, Kansas.
Melvin was born on May 12, 1929 in rural Dorrance, Kansas, the son of George and Lena (Luerman) Meier. He grew up in the Dorrance and Bunker Hill areas most all his life and graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1947. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Faith I. Marsh on June 28, 1948 in Russell, Kansas. From this union Melvin and Faith were blessed with raising 3 children a daughter Marsha, and sons Rodney and Richard. Melvin worked as a farmer most all his life and enjoyed the daily life taking care of his crops and animals. He was a member of Bunker Hill United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, York Rite, Isis Shrine, Order of the Eastern Star and Lions club. He enjoyed being outdoors which explains why he was such an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially enjoyed going out fishing at Lake Wilson with all his many fishing buddies.
He is survived by his two children, daughter Marsha Cobb and husband Paul and Rodney Meier and wife Karen all of Salina, Kansas, longtime companion Bernice Christopher and 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Faith on August 19, 1981, son Richard, infant daughter Sari Jean Meier, brother Gene Meier and sister Janice Flanders.
A celebration of Melvin’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas with Pastor Earl Haggard and Father Charles Steier officiating. Burial will follow at the Bunker Hill Cemetery in Bunker Hill, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Friday, January 10, 2014, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Friday night. Memorials can be given to the Bunker Hill Museum or the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
