Lorraine “Larri” Schulz, 89, of Russell, Kansas died Thursday, March 13, 2014 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Lorraine Lewis Schulz, called Larri by her friends, was born September 22, 1924, in her parent’s home outside of Olathe , Kansas. Her parents were Fredrick M Lewis and Bessie Hazel White Lewis.  She was the sixth of eight children. She went to school in Olathe and Houston, Texas and graduated in 1942 from Austin High School in Houston. After graduation she moved back to Kansas City, Missouri and worked as a bookkeeper for Benson Manufacturing Company and Baker's Shoe.
 
She met her future husband, Bobby Lee Schulz, better known as B.L., while he was attending the University of Kansas City Dental School, now the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Lorraine and B.L. were married in the home of her inlaws, Fanny and Robert Schulz in Greensburg, Kansas on April 8, 1951.   After a short honeymoon to New Orleans, they settled in Russell, Kansas where Bob had established a dental practice. They had four wonderful children Donald Maurice, Diane Lee, Robert Dean, and Dana Lewis who were much loved by their mother.
 
Larri was very active in civic and volunteer organizations. She was a charter member and past president of local chapter HD, P.E.O. Sisterhood. She served as a deacon and trustee of the United Church of Christ, First Congregational Church.  She taught Sunday School and was president of the First Congregational Ladies Guild. She was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader as well as an advisor to Rainbow Girls. She was also a past member of Eastern Star. She was a member of the Gamma Zeta chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.
 
In her spare time, Larri enjoyed the fellowship of friends in her many bridge clubs. She was known throughout the area for her delicious meals and gracious entertaining.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and beloved by all her family and friends.  Her gentle giving nature will be missed by all who knew her. She was never afraid to fight for what she believed in and to protect her family.
 
She is preceeded in death by her parents and siblings: Freddy Montgomery Lewis, Nettie Jane Lewis Setliff Zook, Alice Lucille Carver Hughes, Eloise Virginia Kelly, Ruth Ellen Holthouse, and Robert Raymond Lewis. Also predeceeding her were her inlaws and her brothers-in-law Billy Gene Schulz, his wife Luella and Vern Dean Schulz.
 
She is survived by her beloved husband B.L. Schulz of the home and children Don of Minneapolis, Mn; Diane of Washington, DC; Dean and wife Sue of Hays, Ks; and Dana and wife Barbara of Hysham, Mt. Her sister, Patricia Lewis Johnson of Inverness, Florida is her only living sister.  She also leaves behind grandchildren Brian  Lewis Schulz(Gretchen), Aubrey Lee Schulz(Kori), Luciano Jay Carafano (Meghan), Brenton  Lee Schulz (Emily), Bradley Lawrence Schulz (Autumn), and Wendy Annette Schulz (Jon Reinstatler). She had 7 great-grandchildren. They are Kylie Marie Schulz, Kaden Michael Schulz, Cyrus Jacob Schulz, Kaia Grace Schulz, Aurora Katherine Schulz, William James Reinstatler, and Elena Noelle Reinstatler."

Celebration of Lorriane’s Life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 7, 2014at the First Congregational Church of Russell with Pastor Ron Wedel officiating.  Cremation has preceded the service.  A Memorial has been established with the First Congregational Church.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
