Ina Fay (Hurlbut) Smith, 86 of Russell, Kansas died Friday, March 14, 2014 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Ina was born December 27, 1927 in Lucas, Kansas.  One of four children born to Merle and Gertrude (Zweifel) Hurlbut.  She grew up in Lucas and graduated from Lucas High School in 1945.

Ina was united in marriage to Daniel M. Smith on December 15, 1946 in Sylvan Grove, Kansas.  This union was blessed with two daughters, Linda and Radonna.  They made their home in the Lucas, Luray and Sylvan Grove area.  Then in 1995 they moved to Russell.  Daniel preceded her in death on May 17, 1996.

Ina and Daniel were the owners and operators of the Smith Grocery store in Luray.  She mainly was a devoted wife and homemaker for her daughters.  Later in life, she helped people as a senior companion and was active at the Russell Senior Center.

Ina was a member of the Luray United Methodist Church and also attended Otterbein United Methodist Church.  She also belonged to the Sunflower Polka Club; Russell V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and the Russell American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.  She enjoyed traveling, dancing, fishing and camping, knitting, crocheting, sewing and playing Bridge.

Ina’s surviving family include her two daughters, Linda Fay Leiker of  Hays, Kansas and Radonna Kay Brandenburg (Gerald) of Russell, Kansas; brother, Larry Hurlbut (Linda) of Salina, Kansas; sister, Joyce Scott (Richard) of Russell, Kansas; five grandchildren, four step grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Wanita Hurlbut and son-in-law Christopher Leiker, Sr.

Celebration of Ina’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell with Luke Brandenburg officiating.  Burial will follow at the Luray City Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the Mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM.  A Memorial has been established with the Russell Senior Center.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
