Delbert Lee Cochran, 92 of Waldo, Kansas died Monday, May 26, 2014 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Delbert was born April 9, 1922 in Waldo, the son of Commodore Perry and Bertha Alice (Crawford) Cochrun.

Delbert served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII.  He was a light Machine Gunner.  He received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters from injuries received in Italy.  He also received the good Conduct Medal and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.  After coming home from the war, he resumed his occupation of farming and dairy.  He measured all the production farmland that was effected by Lake Wilson.

Delbert was united in marriage to Barbara Lee Mansfield on December 3, 1943.  This union was blessed with four children; James, Virginia, Jack and Diane.

Delbert was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church.  He was a life member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240, a member of the Disabled American Veteran and served on the Waldo School Board.  He enjoyed the outdoors, square dancing with Barbara, watching westerns and K.C. Chiefs and collecting flashlights.

Surviving family include two sons, James Lee Cochran (Sharon) of Russell, Kansas and Jack Leon Cochran (Jody) of Luray, Kansas; two daughters, Virginia Ann “Ginger” Langdon (Craig) of Lucas, Kansas and Diane Lee Mai (Randy) of Webb City, Missouri; grandchildren, Peter Cochran, Danny Cochran, Amy Kvasnicka, Jeremy Kvasnicka, Emily Bretz, Lori Versluys, Charity Schmidt, Candy Chadwick, Jed Cochran, Shane Mai, Pamela Carley, Scott Mai and Troy Mai; and 18 great grandchildren.

Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife Barbara, sisters Virginia Thomas and Doris Trapp.

Celebration of Delbert’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.  Burial will follow at the Luray City Cemetery where Russell V.F.W. Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Friday, May, 30, 2014 at the mortuary.  A Memorial has been established to the First Responders of Waldo and Paradise.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
