Amy JoAnn Kvasnicka, 45 of Lawrence, Kansas and formerly of Lucas, Kansas died after a courageous battle with metastatic melanoma on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

Amy was born May 20, 1969 in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Roger and Virginia (Cochran) Kvasnicka.  She grew up in Lucas and graduated from Lucas-Luray High School.  Amy attended and graduated from The University of Kansas with a Bachelors degree, majoring in both English and Spanish.  She then attended Washburn University to acquire her teaching degree.  During this time she taught at a small Catholic School in the area.  Later she obtained her Masters of Liberal Arts degree from Baker University.

Amy worked as a teacher in the Basehor & Linwood School District for three years before acquiring her current position at Sumner Academy where she taught Spanish for over seventeen years.  She was a member of the Lucas United Methodist Church.  She lived in the Miller Scholarship Hall at KU and was a member of the Kansas National Education Association, K.N.E.A.  She loved shopping, reading, listening to music, going to the coffee shop in Lawrence and attending KU sporting events, but most of all valued spending time with family and friends.

Surviving family include her mother, Virginia “Ginger” Langdon and husband Craig of Lucas, Kansas; father, Roger Kvasnicka and wife Barbara of Lucas, Kansas; brother, Jeremy Kvasnicka and wife Lara of Lucas, Kansas ; sister, Emily Bretz and husband Matt of Spokane, Washington; step-sister Erin Streit and husband Seth; nieces Kena Kvasnicka and Madison Streit; nephews, Derek Kvasnicka, Eli Bretz, Alex Bretz and Dylan Streit; many loving aunts, uncles and counsins; her Lawrence and Sumner Academy Families.

Celebration of Amy’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, June 13, 2014 at the Lucas United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow at the Lucas City Cemetery.  Visitation with the family will be at the Lucas United Methodist Church on Thursday, June 12, 2014 from 6 PM to 8 PM.  A Memorial has been established as the Amy Kvasnicka Memorial Fund benefiting Sumner Academy.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, who is in charge of these arrangements.
