Edward Eddie Maier, 90, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, September 1, 2014 at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

 

Edward was born October 19, 1923 in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of George Jacob and Anna Marie (Daubert) Maier.  He grew up and attended school in the Susank area.

 

Edward served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII.  He was stationed overseas in the Phillipines.  After his tour of duty, he returned to the Susank area.

 

Edward was united in marriage to Mildred Tozier on August 24, 1947 at the church parsonage in Great Bend, Kansas.  They made their home in Hoisington for a few years before moving to Susank.

 

Edward worked for City Service before the war.  After returning, he began working for Skelly – Getty – Texico as a roustabout, mechanic, truck driver and pumper for 41 years before his retirement.  He also worked as a contract pumper and his days off he would work for Buckeye Supply.  He was an active member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Russell and later was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.  He was a lifemember of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 and American Legion Post #99.  After his retirement, Edward was very active in helping people.  He would help the elderly in his church with yard work or help transport people to Wichita to see the doctor.  He helped with the Honor Guard for funerals and high school sports activities for many years.  He also enjoyed reading and loved spending time with family and friends.

 

Surviving family include his son, Richard Maier (Diana) of Kechi, Kansas; daughter, Karen Deatherage (Dell) of Russell, Kansas; brother, Sam Maier of Great Bend, Kansas; four sisters, Martha Bender, Leona Slankard and Eleanora Postlethwaite all of Great Bend, Kansas and Edna Nuss of Hoisington, Kansas; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers Emil Maier and David Maier and sisters, Alma Stewart and Hilda Jones. 

Celebration of Edward’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, September 6, 2014 at the St. John Lutheran Church.  Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery where the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. Friday, September 5, 2014 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M.  A Memorial has been established with St. John Lutheran Church.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
