Verlin E. “Buster” Humphrey, 67, of Russell, Kansas passed away Monday, January 19, 2015 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.
Buster was born April 12, 1947 in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Kenneth “K.D.” and Ruth (Pearce) Humphrey. They made their home in Hoisington, Kansas until Buster was in the sixth grade when they moved to Logan, Kansas. Then his freshman year they moved to Russell. He graduated from Russell High School and then attended Kansas State University.
Buster was united in marriage to Linda Harmon on April 24, 1980 in Salina, Kansas. They made their home in Russell a few years before moving to Hays, Kansas. Then in 1991 they moved to Topeka, Kansas where they lived for 20 years. After both Buster and Linda retired they return to Russell.
Buster worked for Southern States Oil Co. that later became known as Lasmo Oil Co. He started out as a pumper and made his way up to Regional Production Manager. Buster then worked for over 13 years for the Kansas Lottery, he retired in 2011 as a Regional Sales Manager. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf and watching football. But watching his granddaughters grow up was his real love.
Surviving family include his wife of 34 years, Linda of the home; son, Michael Humphrey (Sara) of Hays, Kansas; daughter, Jamie Basgall of McCracken, Kansas; sister, Cheryl Herrman of Russell, Kansas; five granddaughters, Alessia, Emma, Sophie, Claire and Annie; and three great granddaughters, Penelope, Lillian and Olivia. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bud Humphrey and sister Leah Rae Miller.
A Memorial Service celebrating Buster’s Life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 26, 2015 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary Chapel in Russell. Cremation has preceded the service so no visitation will be held. A Memorial has been established with the Russell Golf Course Men’s Association.
