Carl Alexander Maier, 90, of Russell, Kansas passed away Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Main Street Manor in Russell.

Carl was born July 10, 1924 on the family farm south of Russell.  He was the youngest of six children of George and Katherine (Dumler) Maier.  He grew up on the farm and attended the West Kennebeck School.

Carl served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII.  He was a Purple Heart  and Bronze Star recipient from wounds he sustained in France.  After the war, he returned to the family farm.

Carl was united in marriage to Alice Maier on September 12, 1948 at the Bender Hill Lutheran Church.  This union was blessed with children Marilyn and Blaine.  They made their home on the family farm.  Then in 1997, Carl and Alice moved into Russell.

Carl was a farmer and rancher his whole life.  He was a devoted father who loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.  He drove the road grater for Lincoln Township for many years.  He enjoyed fishing when he had the time.  He also worked at the Dietz Meat Processing in Russell for many years.  He was a member of the Bender Hill Lutheran Church and later the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church where he served on church council for many years.

Surviving family include his wife of 66 years, Alice of the home; daughter, Marilyn Maier of Overland Park, Kansas; son, Blaine Maier (Lori) of Russell, Kansas; five grandchildren, Marci Scheuerman, Micah Scheuerman, Marc Scheuerman (Corrie), Cameron Maier (Elizabeth) and Kaylee Maier; and great granddaughter, Brooklynn Maier.  He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, three brothers and two sisters.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM  Saturday, June 27, 2015 at the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger.  Burial of ashes will follow at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell where the Russell V.F.W. Post # 6240 Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Friday, June 26, 2015 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM.  A Memorial has been established with the Parkinson Foundation.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
