Dwane Leroy McClain, 79, of Russell, Kansas, died on Thursday, July 09, 2015, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.
Dwane was born on May 21, 1936, in Waldo, Kansas, the son of James Leroy "Roy" and Edna (Cook) McClain. He grew up in the Waldo area and graduated from Waldo High School in 1954. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Beth (Winder) McClain on March 12, 1955, in Osborne, Kansas. From this union Dwane and Beth were blessed with 3 children, sons Gary and David and a daughter Mary. Beth preceded Dwane in death on October 26, 1993, in Russell, Kansas. Dwane was fortunate to find love a second time and was united in marriage to Cathy (McLain) Smith on October 12, 1999, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He worked for 36 years as a heavy equipment operator with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). He was a longtime member of Otterbein United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau Board, Otterbein U.M.C. Trustee and a Good Sam R.V. Club member for over 20 years. He loved working his family farm near Waldo and enjoyed spending time outdoors. He also enjoyed woodworking, making crafts, going to craft shows, hunting deer and elk, watching Kansas State University and Wichita State University Basketball, watching P.B.R. Bull riding and attending children and grandchildren's sporting events. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife Cathy of the home, sons Gary McClain and wife Diana of Overland Park, Kansas and David McClain and wife Lorraine of Abilene, Kansas and daughter Mary McClain of Hays, Kansas; stepsons Jesse Smith of Hays, Kansas and Billy Smith of Russell, Kansas; grandchildren Sarah, Sam(Jessica), Anne, Amy and Nathan McClain and Ravyn, Ayden and Daryus "DJ" Smith and John Legleiter.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and sister Norma Lee Matheson.
A celebration of Dwane’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday, July 13, 2015, at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Russell. Graveside services will be held at 2 P.M. on Monday, July 13, 2015, at the Grand Center Cemetery North of Waldo, Kansas. Visitation will be from 1 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Sunday, July 12, 2015, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Sunday evening. Memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Society in Hays, Kansas, and can be sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
