Hubertina R. Herbel, 87, of Hays, Kansas, and former Russell resident, died on Thursday, July 16, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society in Hays, Kansas.
She was born January 23, 1928, in Emmeram, Kansas, the daughter of Fred, Sr. and Ludwina (Sander) Weigel. She grew up in Emmeram and Victoria, Kansas and graduated from Victoria High School in 1946. She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Leo R. Herbel on January 26, 1948 in Russell. From this union Hubertina and Leo were blessed with three children; Leo Jr., Lionel and Brenda.
She was a member of the St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church of Russell. She also belonged to the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Ladies Auxiliary, and St. Mary Guild. She enjoyed traveling, going to casino's, watching K.C. Royals Baseball, Kansas University Basketball and Chiefs football. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. In the final months, days and hours of her life, she was fortunate to have many wonderful care givers. The family would like to thank Mary Jane Davidson, Connie Klein, Ramona Lubbers, Debbie Miller, Wanda Gipson, Laura Ann Hess, Nancy Foiles, Dr. Sam and Amanda Kruse for all the wonderful, compassionate care they gave Hubertina to help make her life easier.
Surviving family include sons, Leo Herbel, Jr. (Linda) of Kansas City, Kansas and Lionel Herbel of Wichita, Kansas; daughter, Brenda Linenberger (Mark) of Hays, Kansas; brother Fred Weigel, Jr. (Joan); sisters, Vera Deganhardt (Jim) of College Park, Maryland; four grandchildren, Stacey, Jason, Taylor and Kobe; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leo on January 19, 2012, and sister Thelma Dreiling.
Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church of Russell. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. A Vigil will be held at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday evening at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church. A memorial has been established with the Holy Family Elementary School and can be sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
