Evelyn Kate C. (Clardy) Scruggs, 95 of Russell, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2017 at Main Street Manor in Russell, Kansas.
Kate was born December 29, 1921, in Halifax, Virginia, the daughter of John Preston and Fanny Bet May (Whitlow) Clardy. She grew up on the family plantation near Vernon Hill, Virginia and graduated from Vernon Hill High School. She then graduated from the Randolph Macon Nursing College at the Virginia Commonwealth University.
Kate was united in marriage to Reginald Harold Courtois on November 09, 1948. He preceded her in death. She was united in marriage to Henry M. Schubert in 1966. He preceded her in death. She was then united in marriage to Frank R. Scruggs on November 17, 1988. He preceded her in death in 2010.
Kate was a Nurse her whole adult life. She worked for Drs. White, Pettyjohn and Schulz, as well as Dr. Panichabhongse and Russell Regional Hospital. She was a member of the Chatham Baptist Church in Chatham, Virginia. She also belonged to the Kansas State Nursing Association, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Russell BPW, and the Elks Lodge. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, attending many Veterans Reunions, attending her children's sporting events and helping take care of people as a nurse.
Kates surviving family include her son R. Harold Courtois (Gayla Sue) of Abiliene, Kansas: daughter Pamela Kaye Courtoise of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; brother John Calvin Clardy of Danville, Virginia; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Kate was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands, brother Roger Preston Clardy and two sisters, Eunice May Clardy and Thelma Alice Clardy.
A Celebration of Kate's Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. Burial will follow at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Monday at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 6:00 P.M. to 8 P.M. Monday evening. A Memorial has been established with Main Street Manor Long Term Care in Russell and can be sent to the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrengements.
