Larry LeRoy Thompson, 80, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, November 06, 2018, at the Wheatland Nursing Center ins Russell, Kansas.
Larry was born on October 28, 1938, in Edwardsville, Illinois, the son of Leanis LeRoy and Isal G. (Powers) Thompson. He grew up in Edwardsville and graduated from Edwardsville High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served at the end of the Korean war and beginning of the Vietnam war. After serving his country he came back to Edwardsville and eventually started his own very successful business as a guttering and siding contractor for many years. He eventually moved to Russell, Kansas, and has called Russell his home for 20 years. He was a member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 and was a member of the American Legion in Edwardsville. He loved playing golf and spent many of his retirement days on the golf cours with his brother and close friends. He also enjoyed watching Kansas University Basketball and was an avid coin collector.
Surviving family include his daughters Laura Hopper (Tim) of Russell, Kansas, and Dawn St. Peters of Atlanta, Georgia; brother Gary Thompson of Russell; sisters Evelyn Jones of Wood River, Illinois and Virginia Wilhold of Edwardsville, Illinois; 4 grandchildren Josh St. Peters, Jeremy Hopper, Taylor Hopper and Morgan St. Peters and 5 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A private family service will be held at a later date and the family selected cremation. Cards can be sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
