Irene Mae (Zeigler) Luhman, 92, of Hays, Kansas, and formerly of Natoma, Kansas, departed this life and went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at the Hays Medical Center.

Irene was born on November 17, 1927 on the family farm near Codell, Kansas.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Natoma.  She graduated from high school in Natoma in 1945.  She then attended Cadet Nursing Training at Salina, Kansas.  Suffering from polio, she did not return to nurses training.

Irene was united in marriage to Hugo Luhman on September 28, 1947 at St. John’s Lutheran Church.  Irene and Hugo were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church and later members of Peace Lutheran Church.  This union was blessed with three daughters, Marjorie, Susan and Cynthia.  They made their home in Laton, Kansas until 1982 when they moved to the family homestead farm north of Natoma.  Hugo preceded her in death on September 24, 2015.

Irene was a devoted farmer's wife and mother to her children.  She was a choir member for 53 years and taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and week day school for several years.  She was an active member of LWML, LLL Fellowship Club, Self Culture Club, Legion Auxiliary, Peace Women’s Guild, and also was a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant.  She helped with the farm work with her husband and daughters.  She especially enjoyed working with cattle, gardening and canning, but what brought her the most joy was her family.

Irene’s surviving family include her three daughters, Marjorie Kertz (husband David) of Hays, Kansas, Susan Green (husband Jerry) of Hays, Kansas and Cindy Elliott of Plainville, Kansas; two grandsons Daniel Green (wife Kinsey) and Steven Elliott (wife Brook) and four great grandchildren, Kasdan Green, Maddex Green, Gracie Palmer and Hazel Elliott.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, husband Hugo,  brothers Marvin Zeigler and Leo Zeigler, and sister Rita Patton.

Celebration of Irene’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma.  Burial will follow at the North Lutheran Cemetery north of Natoma.  The family will be present to greet friends from 9:30 AM to Service time on Saturday at the church.  Memorials have been established with Peace Lutheran Church or The Lutheran Hour.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
