Laveta Ryan (Prater) Green, 96, of Russell died on Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Russell Regional Hospital. She was born on January 16, 1914 in a log cabin near Maramec, Oklahoma, in Pawnee County, the daughter of Samuel and Cordie (Ryan) Prater. Laveta graduated high school at Terlton, Oklahoma, where she first met the love of her life Edgar Lee Green. Several years later they were united in marriage on September 13, 1941. From this union they were blessed with two sons Wayne and Barry. She graduated from Oklahoma State University at Stillwater, Oklahoma, with a degree in education and she taught for several years at Terlton, OK.
Laveta moved to Russell, Kansas, with her small family in 1947 at the end of World War II. She eventually became an active member of the First Congregational Church in Russell. After her two sons reached maturity, Laveta pursued advanced studies in education at Fort Hays Kansas State College and received her masters and specialist degrees in education. She taught for a number of years at Galacia and Hoisington in the Barton County School system.
Laveta was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents Robert and Angeline (Brown) Prater and William and Nancy (Hedges) Ryan and finally her beloved husband of 66 years, Edgar Lee Green as well as her younger brother Emsey Prater.
Surviving family includes her two sons Wayne and Barry Green both of Russell and a niece Linda (Prater) Evans of Portland, Oregon, 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Laveta was a beloved wife, mother, teacher and friend to many. We will sorely miss her and look forward to joining her in the mansion worlds our Lord Christ has promised.
A memorial Celebration of Laveta’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary Chapel of Russell with Pastor Kasey Crosby officiating.
