Duane E. Kingsbury, 60 of Dorrance, died Monday evening, June 21, 2010 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Duane was born July 26, 1949 on the family farm in Smith County, Kansas. He grew up in Smith County, on a farm near Hastings, Nebraska and in Evergreen and Boulder Colorado. He graduated from Fairview High School of Boulder, Colorado in 1967. He attended Mesa College in Gunnison, Colorado. Duane served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1972. He was stationed in London, England and in Germany along the French border. After serving his tour of duty her returned to Boulder where his brother Sid and Duane were the owner and operators of Triple A Tow Truck.
Duane was united in marriage to Karla Kay Brown on October 8, 1977 in rural Boulder County, Colorado. This union was blessed with three children; Jennifer, Steven and Ryan. They made their home in Colorado for a short time before moving to the farm south of Dorrance, Kansas in 1978. Duane was a farmer and rancher at heart. But he also worked for King Of The Road from 1989 to 2000 in Russell. He then worked at the St. Francis Academy as a Youth Supervisor in Ellsworth. Then in 2006 he started working for the Smoky Hill Education of Salina as a Educational Para in Ellsworth.
Duane attended the Episcopal Church at the Academy. He also was a member of the American Legion Post in Wilson. Duane loved to go fishing, playing golf and tinkering with old cars. He also was very active in Youth Baseball as a coach and umpire for many years. Surviving family include his wife of 32 years, Karla of the home; daughter, Jennifer and husband Bill Gould of Temecula, California; son, Steven Kingsbury and wife Danielle of Dorrance, Kansas; mother, Lois Kingsbury of Smith Center, Kansas; two brothers, Sid Kingsbury and wife Amanda and Jeff Kingsbury and wife Sue all of Smith Center, Kansas; and three grandchildren, Apryl, James and Aspyn. He was preceded in death by his father Paul, son Ryan and brother Dennis.
Celebration of Duane’s life will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 25, 2010 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell with Gordon Gorton officiating. Burial will follow at the Dorrance City Cemetery with Military Rites being conducted by the Russell V.F.W. Post # 6240 Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Thursday, June 24, 2010 at the Mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 5 PM to 6 PM. A memorial has been established as the Kingsbury Grandchildren Education Fund. Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
