Genevieve Hanes, 92, of Russell, died on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Russell Regional Hospital.
Genevieve was born on August 7, 1917 in Madison, Kansas, the daughter of Chester and Bertha (Newman) Norton. She grew up in the Madison area and graduated from the Madison High School in 1935. She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Boyd W. Hanes on February 14, 1939 in Great Bend, Kansas. From this union, Genevieve and Boyd were blessed with four daughters: Patricia, Sandra, Sharon and Karen. In 1942 Genevieve and Boyd moved to Russell to raise their family. Genevieve took on the hardest profession of all, being the classic homemaker who dedicated her life to taking care of her growing family. When she was not busy at home you could find her keeping busy at Otterbein United Methodist Church where she and Boyd were members for over 40 years. She enjoyed being active in many of the church circle groups as well as serving on the church Board of Trustees. Genevieve enjoyed a variety of activities such as Girl Scout Leader and Friendly Neighbors E.H.U. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, crafts, collecting, baking, cooking, quilting, painting, sculpting and she never missed watching all the K.U. and K.S.U. football and basketball games shown on television. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her many grandchildren.
Surviving family include her daughters Patricia Staley (Verlyn) of Columbia, Missouri, Sandra Miller (Roger) of Salina, Sharon Quick (Gary) of Lakewood, Colorado and Karen Gage (Rodney) of Russell; brother Kenneth Norton (Alice Bernice) of Stockton, California; sister Darlene Rubenstein (George) of Springfield, Missouri; 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, 3 step-grandchildren, her dog Roy and her cat Miss Kitty.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Boyd on February 8, 1986 and grandson Joshua Gage.
A memorial service to celebrate Genevieve’s life will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary Chapel in Russell with Pastor Earl Haggard officiating. Burial of the cremains will take place at the Russell City Cemetery immediately following the chapel service. The family will greet visitors the day of the service.
