Guest Book Registration: 9 AM to 7 PM THUR. July 29, 2010 at the Pohlman~Varner~Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.
Family Visitation: 5 PM to 7 PM THUR., July 29 at the mortuary.
Burial: At a later date.  Services will conclude at the church.
Memorial:  Hays Medical Center Oncology Dept. or the Russell County Area Community Foundation.

 

Ronald Dean Underwood, 56 of Russell died Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas following a battle with cancer.

Ron was born February 6, 1954 in Springfield, MO at Burge Hospital the son of Lowell “Pat” and Velma (Myers) Underwood.  The Underwoods moved to Russell in 1961 and Ron graduated from Russell High School in 1972.

Ron attended both Colby Community College and Ft. Hays State University.

In September 1983, Ron was united in marriage to Nancy Marie Bender. Together, they had two children, Alex and Seth.

In 1988, Ron and Nancy purchased Russell Carpet Company. They owned and operated it for six years when Ron sold the carpet business and began purchasing and managing rental properties.

Ron enjoyed watching his boys in their various activities particularly Alex’s musical performances and Seth’s wrestling matches. Ron savored his time with his wife Nancy traveling to Hawaii in March. He also loved a good game of golf or a fishing trip to the lake with his friends.

Surviving family includes his wife of 26 years Nancy of the home; two sons, Alex Underwood and Seth Underwood both of Russell; parents, Lowell “Pat” and Velma Underwood of Russell; brother Rick Underwood and wife Sherri of Russell, mother-in-law Marceline Bender of Russell, many other family members and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Randall. 

A celebration of Ron’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, July 30, 2010 at Otterbein United Methodist Church in Russell with Rev. Earl J. Haggard officiating.  The family will be present to greet friends from 5 PM to 7 PM. Thursday evening at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.  A memorial has been established with the Oncology Wing at the Hays Medical Center or the Russell County Area Community Foundation.  Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.  Condolences may also be sent via email at www.pvpmortuary.com.
