Henry Karl Savage, 82 of Russell died Saturday, August 07, 2010 at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  Karl was born February 7, 1928 in Spring Valley, Arkansas the son of Martin and Olive (Cook) Savage.  He grew up in Spring Valley until 1945 when Karl and his family moved to Russell.  He graduated from Russell High School in 1947.

Karl served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He was with the 85th Infantry Reg. in the 10th Infantry Division at Ft. Riley.

Karl was united in marriage to Norma Truan on September 22, 1952 in Russell.  This union was blessed with two children, Ronald and Lana.

Karl worked as a car salesman for over 20 years then maintained the Russell Housing for several years retiring in 1989.  After retiring, he did “handyman” work for several people in the Russell and surrounding area.

Karl was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church of Russell.  He also was a life member of the Knights of Columbus and the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240.  Karl was a musician all of his life playing with a number of area bands.  During his later years he played with the Sportsman.

Surviving family include his wife of 57 years, Norma of the home; daughter Lana Schutte and husband Tom of Pretty Prairie, Kansas; brother, Kenneth Savage and wife Yvonne of Hays, Kansas; two grandchildren, Derek Schutte and wife Diana of Jetmore, Kansas and Mamie Haque and husband Zarif of Lawrence, Kansas; six great grandchildren, Dominique Schutte, Dalaina Schutte, Dyron Schutte, Neylana Haque, Audin Haque and Kaysari Haque; nieces, nephews and lots of friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, son Ronald in 1977 and sister Geraldine Driscoll.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell with Father Charles Steier and Father James Grennan officiating.  Burial will follow at the St. Marys Catholic Cemetery in Russell.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.  A Vigil will be conducted at 7 P.M. at the Mortuary.  Memorials have been established with South Wind Hospice of Russell or St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery Fund.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.  Condolences may also be sent via email at www.pvpmortuary.com.
