Dean E. Wineland, 93, of Natoma, Kansas died on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, Kansas.
Dean was born on August 25, 1917 in Natoma, Kansas, the son of Eugene and Louise (Miller) Wineland. He grew up, attended school and spent most of his life in the Natoma, Kansas area. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Marjorie Rinearson on September 9, 1942 in Russell, Kansas. From this union they were blessed with two children a son Larry and daughter Jan. He joined the U.S. Army from 1941-1945 and served during World War II in the 635th Tank Destroyer Battalion. When he returned from the service he went to work in the oilfield, working for Krueger Oil Company in Natoma. After many years working for Krueger Oil, he went out on his own and was owner and operator of Dean Wineland Oil. He was a member of the Natoma United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Natoma American Legion and V.F.W. Post 6240 in Russell. He enjoyed boating, fishing, veteran reunions and working. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving family include his wife Marjorie, married 68 years, of the home, son Larry Wineland and wife Eileen of Otis, Kansas; daughter Jan Burkholder and husband Mike of Hays, Kansas; five grandchildren Shawn Schieber, Sherri Matlock and husband Johnny, Todd Wineland and wife Tara, Jeremy Burkholder and wife Stephanie and Joshua Burkholder and wife Brandy; twelve great grandchildren Jake, Toni, Maggie, Jordan, Shelby, Macy, Anna, Nick, Christian, Isaiah, Seth and Kyle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Lowell and Victor Wineland.
A celebration of Dean’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at the United Methodist Church of Natoma with Bob McCobb and Pastor Allison Williams officiating. Graveside services will follow at the Natoma City Cemetery in Natoma with military honors performed by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Monday, December 6, 2010 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Natoma, Kansas. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church of Natoma and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
