Joyce Marie Shumaker, 81, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday morning, July 8, 2011 at her son's home in Russell.
Joyce was born on February 9, 1930 in Gorham, Kansas the daughter of John A. and Helen Mae (Benso) Maronde.  She grew up in the Russell County area and graduated from Russell High School in 1947.  After high school, she graduated from Marymount College of Salina in 1951.  She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Herbert M. Shumaker, on August 27, 1955 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Russell.  From this union Joyce and Herbert were blessed with three children David, Cecilia and Herbie.  Joyce worked as a Lab Technician and Nurses Aide at the Russell County Hospital for 19 years.  She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Russell, the Antique Club, T.O.P.S. and enjoyed playing with several bridge clubs.  She enjoyed spending hours working word search and crossword puzzles.  She also enjoyed her cats, Danielle Steel novels, Kansas University sports, plants, collecting Christmas/Santa Clause items, cup saucers and bells.  She also enjoyed attending auctions and garage sales.  Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Joyce is survived by her daughter Cecilia Shumaker and son Herbie and wife Kim Shumaker, both of Russell; brother Jack Maronde of New Zealand; 6 grandchildren Christina (Shumaker) Tammen, Greg Shumaker, Cody and Clayton Bennett, Herbie and Klaudia Shumaker and 1 great grandchild Skylar Tammen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herbert on May 7, 1988, and son David on June 16, 2005.
A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at 10 A.M. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with Father James Grennan officiating.  Burial will follow at the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Russell.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Monday, July 11, 2011 at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Monday evening.  Memorials may be given to the Joyce M. Shumaker Memorial Fund and sent in care of the mortuary.   Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
