Margaret May Carter, 91, of Salina and former Russell resident, died on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at her son’s home in Salina. 

Margaret was born on April 15, 1920 in Hoisington, Kansas the daughter of Abraham and Martha Alvena (Connor) Corrigan.  She grew up and attended school in the Hoisington area.  After graduating high school she met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Cameron E. Carter on March 23, 1941 in Hoisington.  From this union, they were blessed with seven children Dwight, Billy, Bob, Judy, James, Steven and Mary.  Cameron preceded her in death on October 27, 1993.  Margaret was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Russell and very active in the St. Mary’s Ladies Auxiliary.  She enjoyed being a homemaker and it was a full time job for her taking care of the home and seven children.  She also enjoyed gardening, tending her flowers, reading, shopping and loved taking care and babysitting other children in the community.  Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her children and many grandchildren.

Surviving family include her sons James Carter and wife Carol of Salina, Dwight Carter and wife Jeannie of Gorham, and Steve Carter of Russell; daughter Mary Hite of Russell; sister Florence Walters in Kingman, Kansas; grandchildren Anthony, Michael, Billy, Carol, Janele, Aaron, Jami, Rachel, Albert, Brittany, Andrew, Sheri, Tammy, Robbie and Becky and 13 great grandchildren with one on the way and 3 great-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, husband Cameron, sons Billy and Bob Carter and a daughter Judy Renna.

A celebration of the funeral mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell, Kansas with Father Charles Steier officiating.  A Rosary will be held at 10 A.M. Saturday morning, 30 minutes before the funeral mass.  Burial will follow, after the service, at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell.  Visitation will be at the mortuary from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Friday, December 9, 2011with the family present to greet guest from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Friday evening.  Memorials may be given to Hospice of Salina and sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
