James J. “Jim” Schumacher, 75, of Russell, Kansas, died on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Jim was born on February 28, 1937, in Park, Kansas, the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Stecklein) Schumacher.  He grew up and attended the country school near Grainfield, Kansas.  Later, he joined the United States Navy during the post Korean War era.  He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Geneva Schmidt on October 7, 1961 in Grinnell, Kansas.  From this union they were blessed with four children Shelly, Tod, Bruce and Brian.  Jim was a skilled carpenter and was owner and operator of Schumacher Construction for many years.  He was a longtime member of the St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell.  He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, V.F.W. Post #6240 of Russell and was past president of the Kansas Builders Association.  He enjoyed fishing, golfing and working on the computer.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include his wife Geneva of the home; daughter Shelly Depiesse and husband Ed of Lakin, Kansas; sons Tod Schumacher and wife Linda of Raleigh, North Carolina, Bruce Schumacher and wife JoLana of La Junta, Colorado, and Brian Schumacher and wife Jodi of Great Bend, Kansas; sister Marge Depperschmidt of Hill City, Kansas; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ralph, Eddie, Richard, Herbert, Gilbert, Hubert, and Roman, and sisters Dorinda, Louella, Agnes, Patricia, Mary, and Darlene.

A celebration of the funeral mass for Jim will be held at 10 A.M. on Friday, March 30, 2012, at the St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church of Russell, with Father Charles Steier officiating.  Burial will follow at the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.  The vigil and rosary service will be held at 7 P.M. on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at the church.  Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the V.F.W. Post #6240 of Russell, Kansas.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. at the mortuary on Thursday, March 29th.  Memorials may be given to the St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church or the Heartland Cancer Center of Great Bend, Kansas, and sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
