Hubert M. Gudenkauf, 87, of Russell died Saturday, April 07, 2012 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Hubert was born September 20, 1924 in Seneca, Kansas, the son of Henry J. and Barbara (Jueneman) Gudenkauf.  He grew up in Seneca and Topeka, Kansas, Kansas City, Missouri, Rock Island, Illinois, and Frankfort, Kansas.  Hubert graduated from Frankfort High School.  He then attended Creighton University and Kansas State University.

Hubert was united in marriage to Ramona Carlin on June 9, 1947 in Frankfort, Kansas.  This union was blessed with three children; Linda, Bob and Chuck.  They made their home in Frankfort until 1972 when they moved to Russell.

He started working with his father in 1942 at the Frankfort Grain Company. Then in 1972, he moved to Russell and worked for Russell Milling Company until 1974 when he joined Russell Agco Company where he worked until his retirement. After retiring, Hubert spent several years traveling around the country working with Farmland as an interim manager for local Coops in Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, and Missouri. He continued to stay active through part-time work with R&M Heating/Cooling, H&R Block, and Tower Auto Plaza as well as philanthropic work.

Hubert was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was a third degree Knight of Columbus.  He was an Exalted Ruler of the Russell Elks Lodge, a member of the National Rifle Association, Heartland Sam’s Camping Club, and The Silver Haired Legislature.  He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and was a Russell County Free Fair award winner for his wood working skills.  When his children were younger he was active in 4-H.

Surviving family include his wife of 64 years, Ramona of the home; daughter, Linda Scheck (Rod) of Wichita, Kansas; sons, Bob Gudenkauf (Debbie) of Olathe, Kansas and Chuck Gudenkauf (Pam) of Russell, Kansas; sister, Cecilia Bourbonnais of Goddard, Kansas; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and great grandson, Henry Scheck.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at the St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Charles Steier officiating.  Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell.  Visitation will be from 9 AM till 5 PM Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.  Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7 PM Tuesday evening at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church.  Memorials have been established with the Russell Elks Lodge and   Knights of Columbus. Contributions and condolences maybe sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
