John E. Drake, Jr.,87, and former Russell resident died on Monday, June 11, 2012, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

John was born on October 25, 1924, in Lakin, Kansas, the son of John E. Sr. and Bessie Catherine (Taylor) Drake.  He was united in marriage to his wife Mary who preceded in death in 2006.  He was the owner and operator of Drakes Engine Service for 30 years in the Russell County area.  He enjoyed working in his yard, making bird houses and tinkering with things such as engines, motors and mechanical gadgets.

He is survived by his step son Kevin Rankin of Solomon, Kansas and step daughter Kellie Rankin of Russell, Kansas; 5 step grandchildren and 1 step great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, companion Geneva Rankin, two brothers and two sisters.

A private memorial service will be held by his family at a later date and a cremation service has been selected.  Cards and condolences may be sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
