Helen M. Proshek, 98 of Russell died Saturday, September 08, 2012 at Main Street Manor in Russell, Kansas.
Helen was born on the family farm in Lanesburg Town, Le Sueur County, Minnesota on October 13, 1913, the daughter of Anton J. and Johanna (Mikiska) Proshek. She attended District #61 through 8th grade and graduated from Sherman High School in Montgomery, Minnesota in 1931.
Following graduation, she worked two summers at Glacier National Park. She worked in St. Paul, Minnesota as a domestic, in a carpet factory and during WWII in a munitions plant until her youngest brother was drafted. Helen returned to the farm to help her mother and oldest brother. They raised registered Ayrshire dairy cattle, hogs, chickens, ducks and Helen had a State permit to raise Canada geese. At age 84, Helen moved from the farm to an apartment in Montgomery. When she was 89, Helen moved to Russell, Kansas to be near her niece and family.
Helen is survived by her niece, Patricia (Don) Haberer of Russell, Kansas; nephew, Charles (Barbara) Proshek of Burnsville, Minnesota; niece-in-law, Jacqueline Proshek of Cold Spring, Minnesota; 6 great nephews, 3 great nieces, many great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews, several cousins in the Montogery, Minnesota area and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Mary, Ann and Rose; brothers John, Frank, Jim, George, Louis and Stanley; and infant brother, sister-in-law Dorothy Proshek, and nephew james Proshek.
Graveside Services will be held at 10 AM Friday, September 14, 2012 in the Czech National Cemetery in New Prague, Minnesota. A cemetery that her grandfather, Bartos Mikiska, was a co-founder. Cremation has preceded the services. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary is in charge of these arrangements.
