Ilene Marie (Standley) Deatherage, 84 of Russell died Sunday, September 16, 2012 at her home.
Ilene was born February 13, 1928 in Lucas, Kansas the daughter of Albert Franklin and Elsie Elizabeth (Ward) Standley. She grew up on the family farm north of Lucas and attended country schools. She graduated from Lucas High School and then attended Ft. Hays State University and obtained her degree in teaching.
Ilene was united in marriage to Derrold Eugene Deatherage on July 15, 1950 in Augusta, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children; Linda, David and Dell. They made their home in Bunker Hill, Kansas before Derrold joined the military. They then lived in Columbia, South Carolina while he was in the Military. They then returned to Russell. Derrold preceded her in death on October 26, 1985.
Ilene taught school at the Blue Hill Country School before getting married. She then was the bookkeeper for Deatherage Trucking. Then in 1988 she started working for Contact America in Victoria and worked there until her retirement in 2010 at the age of 82.
Ilene enjoyed doing puzzles, reading, playing cards and attending family gatherings. She was a quiet person that was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Surviving family include her daughter, Linda Rizzo (Don) of Russell, Kansas; two sons, David Deatherage (Rebecca) and Dell Deatherage (Karen) all of Russell, Kansas; 6 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Gerald, James, Warren and Dale; and two sisters, Helen Harris and Sarah Arnold.
Celebration of Ilene’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, September 21, 2012 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell with burial following at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Thursday, September 20, 2012 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. Condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
