Rebecca L. Schauf, 99 of Russell, Kansas and formerly of Bunker Hill, Kansas died Sunday, March 17, 2013 at the Vintage Place Assisted Living in Russell.

Rebecca was born October 6, 1913 on the family farm two and a half miles southwest of Dorrance, Kansas the daughter of Helen L. (Hutchinson) and Roger Burns.

Rebecca attended Colony School, District 6, and Dorrance High School.  She was part of the graduating class of 1932.  After teaching school for one year, Rebecca decided to stay at home so she could care for her parents and tend to the family farm.  When her father passed away in 1941, Rebecca and her mother moved to San Gabriel, California.  Rebecca began working at an Insurance & Property/Income Tax Preparation office.  She remained in the same kind of work for twenty-five years.

On November 10, 1945 Rebecca was united in marriage to Clifford Schauf.  Rebecca and Clifford first met while he was collecting information for the Census in 1940.  They had no further communication until 1942 when Rebecca received a letter from Clifford asking for her to correspond with him while he was overseas fighting in the war.  They continued to correspond with each other for over two and a half years.  January 1945 marked the beginning of their courtship when Clifford returned to the States and was stationed in southern California.  Rebecca and Clifford remained in California until 1971 when they moved back to Russell County.  They farmed until May 2004 when they retired and moved to Vintage Place Assisted Living.

Rebecca enjoyed being a homemaker, square dancing and traveling in their RV, she visited all 48 continental states and Alaska.  Rebecca was a member of the Dorrance Homemakers FCE, Bunker Hill United Methodist Church, Women’s Society of Bunker Hill and American Legion Auxiliary of Dorrance.

Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents and husband Clifford on November 27, 2005.  Survivors include two sister-in-laws, Jean Pines of Maryland and Frances Germaine Baker Missimer of Derby, Kansas; four nieces; two nephews and a lifetime of friends.

Celebration of Rebecca’s Life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 22, 2013 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with Rev. Earl Haggard officiating.  Burial will follow at the Dorrance City Cemetery in Dorrance, Kansas.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the mortuary.  A Memorial has been established with the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church.  Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of the mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
