Richard D. “Rich” Dumler, 83, of Russell, Kansas, died on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Rich was born on August 31, 1929, in Russell, the son of David B. and Hildegarde (Morgenstern) Dumler.  He was raised and attended local schools in Russell, was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church and graduated from Russell High School in 1947.  He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 and was stationed in Fort Amador, Panama.  He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Vera D. Schultz on October 23, 1955, in Russell.  From this union Rich and Vera were blessed with three children Lori, Brad and Lynn.  Rich worked as a clerk for Banker’s Mercantile starting his first real job at age 13.  Later in life he worked for KRSL Radio station as a sales representative and worked his way up to station manager and also worked as an examiner with the State of Kansas Drivers License Office.  He and Vera both retired in 1992.  He was a lifetime member of St. John Lutheran Church and a member of the American Legion.  He enjoyed woodworking, wood carving, model airplanes, dancing, walking and loved visiting and seeing old friends.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

Rich was survived by his wife Vera of the home, daughter Lori Dumler and husband Marlin of Aurora, Oregon, son Brad Dumler and wife Linda of Arlington, Texas and daughter Lynn Dumler of Russell; sisters Dava Carrell and Donna Hutchison; 4 grandchildren Katie Vars, Jake Dumler, Cody Dumler and Samantha Dotson; 4 great grandchildren Taylor Vars and Logan Vars, Allison Dumler and Adrian Dumler.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Lenora Miller ; nephew Steffan Miller and niece Merceda Ares.

A memorial service for Rich will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Monday, March 25, 2013, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Monday evening.  Memorials may be given to the St. John Lutheran Church and the Alzheimer’s Association and sent in care of the mortuary.  Cremation has preceded the service and the family will have a private inurnment of the cremains.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary is in charge of the memorial service arrangements.
