Jean A. Gibson, 81, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.
Jean was born on July 30, 1931, in Falls City, Nebraska, the daughter of Jacob and Gladys (Goldman) Schuetz. She grew up in Falls City and attended local schools. She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to George Edward Gibson on November 05, 1954 in Platte City, Nebraska. George preceded Jean in death on August 17, 1979. Jean lived in Atchison, Kansas, St. Joseph, Missouri, Phoenix, Arizona, Highland, Kansas and Holton, Kansas. She worked as a certified nurse’s assistant in Holton and Topeka hospitals. She also worked as a contract painter and housekeeper. She was a longtime member of the Assembly of God Church in Russell. She was also a longtime member of the V.F.W. and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting, painting, working in the yard and spending time with family.
Surviving family include her daughters Melody Anderson of St. Mary’s, Kansas, Melanie Shelman and husband John of Ark City, Kansas, Jean Oden and husband Hugh of Wilson, Kansas and Gigi McCrory of Holton, Kansas; brother David Schuetz of Texas and sisters Verna Roberts of Harrisonville, Missouri and Carol Reynolds of Hermitage, Missouri; 12 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband George, brothers Richard and Merle Schuetz, grandson Michael Chad McCrory, great grandson Ian Zibell and son in-law Fletcher Anderson.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, May 24, 2013, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Following the chapel service, graveside services will be held at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 P.M. to 6 P.M. on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the mortuary. Memorials may be given to the Russell American Legion Post #99 and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
