Floyd Edward Thayer, 92, of Bunker Hill, Kansas died Sunday, August 18, 2013 at the Kansas Christian Home in Newton, Kansas.
Floyd was born October 10, 1920 in Maywood, Nebraska, the son of Lawrence and Alta Pearl (Smith) Thayer. He grew up in Maywood and graduated from Maywood High School.
Floyd was united in marriage to Irene Chase. Irene preceded him in death in 1968. Later he was united in marriage to Elsie Alphia Ferguson. Elsie preceded his in death in 2006.
Floyd moved to the Russell area in 1992, moving here from St. Johns, Kansas. He was a laborer and handyman for farmers and oil companies. He was a jack-of-all-trades that could handle anything that came along.
Floyd’s life was based around working, but he also enjoyed reading, doing puzzles and then framing them and spending time with family and friends.
Surviving family include his son Ray Thayer (Sheri) of Minitare, Nebraska; daughters, Pat Steckman (Clifford) of Bunker Hill, Kansas and Lorna Simmonds (Zane) of Ft. Morgan, Colorado; step daughter, Katherine Moeller of Republic, Kansas; 10 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, infants Janice Thayer and Floyd Thayer, daughter Joyce Harris, step daughter Betty Wells, one brother, two half brothers, two half sisters, grandsons Darrell and Danny and great grandson Coletonn.
Celebration of Floyd’s Life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Bunker Hill Cemetery in Bunker Hill, Kansas. Friends may sign the book from 9 AM to 5 PM Wednesday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. Cremation has preceded the services. A memorial has been established with KSU Basic Cancer Research. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary who is in charge of these arrangements.
