Paul A. Mai, 89, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, October 04, 2013, at the Hays Medical Center.
 
Paul was born on August 03, 1924 in Russell, the son of Reinhardt F. and Maria (Mary) Katherina (Ehrlich) Mai.  He grew up and lived in Russell all his life and graduated from Russell High School in 1942.  After high school he joined the United States Army and fought during World War II.  After the war, he met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Shirley Joan North.  They were united in marriage on May 13, 1953 in Russell.  From this union they were blessed with 3 children Randal, Gregory and Nancy.  His wife Shirley preceded him in death on September 26, 2011.  Paul worked as a District Manager for Bethlehem Steel for 40 years.  He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell.  He was also a member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 where he served as post commander 2 times, American Legion Post #99, 32nd degree member of the Shrine and a Mason.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and RV traveling with Shirley. He also enjoyed farming, watching sporting events, playing pinochle and SkipBo.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
 
He is survived by 3 children sons Randal Paul Mai and wife Assela of Ardmore, Oklahoma and Gregory A. Mai of Russell and daughter Nancy G. Mai of Hays, Kansas; brother Alex Mai of Russell and sisters Helen Keil  and Lydia Mai both of Russell; sister in laws, Helena Mai of Hoisington and Edna Mai of Russell. 4 grandchildren Wayne Mai, Elizabeth Mai, Brian Mai and George Philip VI, and 5 great grandchildren.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley, brothers Emanuel and Edward Mai, sister Pauline Kyle and great granddaughter Krystal Mai.
 
A celebration of Pauls’s life will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, October 11, 2013, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating.  Cremation has been selected by the family.  Burial of the cremains will follow at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell.  Military honors will be presented by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, October 10, 2013, at the mortuary with the family present from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M.. Memorials may be given to the Russell County Veterans Memorial or St. Johns Lutheran Church in Russll and sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
