Nenah Belle (Stephens) Bachar Hummel, 93 of Russell, Kansas died Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Nenah was born November 6, 1919 in the Hornview area north of Russell, the daughter of John T. and Grace Belle (McAllister) Stephens.  She grew up in the Hornview area and attended country schools.

Nenah was united in marriage to Paul Bachar on April 18, 1938 in Russell.  They made their home in the Russell County area.  Paul preceded her in death on March 16, 1992.  She then was united in marriage to Jess W. Hummel, Jr. on December 31, 1993 in Oologah, Oklahoma.  They lived in Oklahoma for a couple of years before returning to the Russell area.  Jess preceded her in death on September 5, 2008.

Nenah worked in the cafeteria at the Russell High School for many years before moving to Bickerdyke School before retiring in 1993.  She also was a devoted mother, homemaker and farmer’s wife.

Nenah was a faithful member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church.  She was a life member of the Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel and the Russell V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.  She grew up as a 4-H member and later was a 4-H Leader.  She would enter food and sewing projects every year in the Russell County Free Fair.  She enjoyed sewing, cooking, doing charcoal paintings and chatting with family and friends.

Nenah’s surviving family include her daughter, Pauline Berry (Stu) of Talala, Oklahoma; sons, James Bachar (Paulita) of Virginia, Illinois and Jess Hummel III (Diane) of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; two sisters, Shirley Krug (Ron) and Faith Steponick all of Russell, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Jan Bachar of Dorrance, Kansas; 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, son Kent Bachar, brother Neal Stephens and sister Vivian Brandenburg.

Celebration of Nenah’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at the Otterbein United Methodist Church with Pastor Earl Haggard officiating.  Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Monday, October 28, 2013 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler of Russell with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM.  A memorial has been established with the Otterbein United Methodist Church.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
