William Hummel, Jr., 90, of Russell, died on Friday, September 5, 2008 at the Hays Medical Center.  Jess was born on July 3, 1918 in Caney, Kansas the son of Jess W. Sr. and Mary (Rose) Hummel.

 

Jess grew up in Madison and Russell, Kansas and attended Russell Public Schools.  He joined the United States Army and fought in World War II in Africa and the European Theater.  He was always proud of his military service and honored to defend his country during the war.  He was united in marriage to Alice Irene Bender on May 2, 1938 in Russell.  They were blessed with a son Jess W. III.  Jess was a lifelong pumper in the oil field business for 40 years, and business was good and kept him moving.  His work took him to places like Wichita, Phillipsburg and the Hill City area including Wakeeney where he worked for Tenneco Oil until he retired.  Alice preceded Jess in death on December 3, 1992, but Jess was blessed for a second time when he was united in marriage to Nenah Bell (Stephens) Bachar on December 31, 1993 in Oologah, Oklahoma.

 

Jess was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church of Russell.  He was also a member of the American Legion, Big Creek Golf Association in Wakeeney and involved in the Eagles in Trego County.  He enjoyed listening to Kansas City Royals baseball and the Russell Broncos Football on the radio.  He also loved hunting and golfing but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 

Surviving family include his wife Nenah of the home; son Jess W. Hummel III and his wife Terri of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; step son James Bachar of Virginia, Illinois; step daughter Pauline Berry and husband Stuart of Talala, Oklahoma; brother James R. of Henderson, Nevada; 18 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

 

He was also preceded in death by his parents; sister Clara A. Kingen and an infant brother Robert.

 

A celebration of Jess’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Russell with Pastor Earl Haggard officiating.  Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery with military rites provided by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240.  Viewing will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Monday, September 8th at the mortuary with the family present to greet visitors from 5:30 P.M. to 7 P.M. Memorials may be given to the Kansas Lions Eye Bank.  Memorials and condolences may be sent to the mortuary 610 N. Maple * Russell, KS  67665.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
