Hubert Alexander Laubhan, 91 of Russell died Sunday, October 26, 2008 at Russell Regional Hospital.  Hubert was born April 8, 1917 in Russell, the son of John and Maria (Nuss) Laubhan.  He grew up in Russell.  He was on the varsity basketball team at Russell High School.  He graduated from Russell High School in 1935.

Hubert served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII.  He first played semi-pro baseball in Puerto Rico before transferring to the 910th Anti Aircraft in central Europe.  After the war he returned to Russell

Hubert worked for the City of Russell in the Electrical department for over 47 years.  He was a lineman and line foreman before retiring in 1984.

Hubert was united in marriage to Betty Yost on January 25, 1947 in Russell.  This union was blessed with three children; Lizbeth, Larry and Michael.

 Hubert was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church.  He also belonged to the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 and the Russell Elks Lodge.  Hubert loved spending time in his garden.  He received a Grand Champion Ribbon and, at the age of 90, received Reserved Grand Champion for his tomatoes at the Russell County Fair.  He had a great sense of humor, who always had a smile for family and friends.  He enjoyed watching sports, especially college basketball.

His surviving family include his wife Betty of the home; daughter, Lizbeth Thielen of Russell; sons, Larry Laubhan and wife Sydnie of Russell and Michael Laubhan and wife Kathleen of Wichita; sister, Ruth Sands and husband Bob of Hobbs, New Mexico; sister-in-laws, Irene Laubhan and Eleanor Laubhan both of Russell; five grandchildren, Angela (Thielen) Smith, Adam Thielen, Lucas Alexander Thielen, Matthew Laubhan and Mark Laubhan; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Victor, Georg, Edwin and Paul; and infant sister, Maria.

Celebration of Hubert’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 29. 2008 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.  A private family committal will follow at Russell City Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM.  A memorial has been established with St. Johns Lutheran Church of Russell.  Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary who are in charge of these arrangements.
