Jerry J. Driscoll, 81 of Russell died Monday, November 17, 2008 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. Jerry was born October 6, 1927 near Dorrance, Kansas, the son of James J. and Elizabeth (Miller) Driscoll. He grew up and attended school in the Dubuque area.
Jerry served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the South Pacific.
After the war, Jerry returned to the Dorrance area. He was united in marriage to Ella Mae Cooper on February 23, 1950 in Osborne, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children; John, Mitchel and Sherry.
Jerry has been involved with farming, ranching and oil production most all of his life. In 1980 he started the Jerry J. Driscoll Oil Investments, which his sons continue today. Jerry’s hobbies were his work and his family. He was the kind of man who would stop and help anyone in need.
He is a member of St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church. He is also a Life Member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240, Russell American Legion Post #99, and the Russell Elks Lodge. He also served on the Board for the Rural Water District #2.
Surviving family include his wife of 58 years Ella Mae of the home; two sons, John Driscoll and wife Yvonne and Mitchel Driscoll and wife Amy all of Russell; brother, Larry Driscoll of Russell; five grandchildren, Victoria Tomilison and husband Jamie, Anthony, Talbot, Matthew and Logan. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Sherry in 2000; five brothers, Max, Francis, James, Daniel and Dick; and sister Bernadine Truan.
Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, November 20, 2008 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Marys Catholic Cemetery. Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard will be conducting Military Rites. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 5 PM Wednesday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. A Vigil will be held at 7 PM Wednesday at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church. A memorial has been established with St. Marys Catholic Cemetery Fund.
