Richard Raymond “Dick” Vaupel, 76 of Russell died Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at his home.  Dick was born March 19, 1932 north of New Cambrid in Saline County, the son of Charles and Clara (Nelson) Vaupel.  He grew up in Ft. Scott, KS, Minneapolis, KS. and Bennington, KS. Where he graduated from High School.

 

Dick started working for a construction firm in Salina where he was involved with the construction of the Salina High School.  He then worked for Skelgas in Salina.  He then started working for American Telephone Co. in Bennington in 1951.  The telephone company became United, then Sprint and was Embarq when he retired in 1994 after 42 years mainly as a lineman.

 

Dick was united in marriage to Clela Fae Bates on May 27, 1956 in Bennington.  This union was blessed with three children; Steve, Rick and Arlene.  When first married they lived in Beverly, KS.  Then moved to Clyde, KS for a number of years before moving to Russell in 1970.

 

Dick enjoyed being outside, especially hunting, fishing or walking his dog Toby around town.

 

Surviving family include his wife of 52 years, Fae of the home; two sons, Steve Vaupel and companion Deb Snook of Russell and Richard Vaupel and wife Phyllis of Lucas; two brothers, Charles Vaupel of Superior, NE and Carl Vaupel of Burrton, KS; two sisters, Vivian Werner of Bennington, KS and Helen Malmstrom of Hutchinson, KS; and two grandsons, Michael Vaupel and Matthew Vaupel.  He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Arlene Vaupel and sister Dorothy.

 

Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.  Cremation has preceded the services.  A memorial has been established with South Wind Hospice.  Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who are in charge of these arrangements.
