Charles L. “Chuck” Royal, Jr., 62 of Russell died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at the Hays Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.  Chuck was born April 9, 1946 in Yonkers, New York, the son of Charles, Sr. and Evelyn Lillian (Connel) Royal.  While growing up his family moved to Baldwin Park, California where he graduated from Baldwin Park Evening High School.  He attended Chaffey College in Alta Loma, California where he received an Associate’s degree in Arts.

 

Chuck served his country in the United States Marine Corps during Vietnam.  He served two tours of duty and had the rank of lance corporal.

 

Chuck was an independent manufacturing engineer who built airplanes and helicopters. He even worked on Air Force One.  He had to move around a lot because of his business.  He has lived in California, Texas, Maryland, Connecticut, and West Virginia.  He lived in Wichita and moved to Russell in 2006.  He worked for Casey’s General Store as a cashier here in Russell.

 

Chuck was united in marriage to Monica June Tatro on September 29, 2001 in Andover, Kansas.

 

Chuck was a life member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240.  He enjoyed bowling, golf, fishing, snorkeling, and taking sea cruises.  Chuck loved being able to help people.  He always had a smile for everyone.  He even helped someone in death by donating his eyes.

 

Surviving family include his wife Monica of the home; five children, June Marie, Tracy Lynn, Thomas James, Michelle Marie and Stephanie Ann; sister, Charlene Lillian; and two grandchildren, McKenzie Renee and Joshua Scott, Jr.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Celebration of Charles’ Life is scheduled for 11 AM Monday, April 6, 2009 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.  Cremation will follow the services.  Military Honors will be conducted by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard at the mortuary.  Visitation will be Sunday from Noon to 8 PM at the mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM.  Condolences may be sent via email at www.pvpmortuary.com.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of these arrangements.
