Mayme “Mae” (Steponick) Blehm, 92 of Dorrance died Monday, April 6, 2009 at Main Street Manor in Russell.  Mae was born February 27, 1917 in Bronx, New York, the daughter of Alfred and Antonia (Hydukeviz) Steponick.  Her family left New York and traveled by wagon west, settling in Russell County.

 

Mae was united in marriage to Dave Heinze in 1925 in Russell County.  He preceded her in death by an auto accident in 1938.  She was united in marriage to Herbert E. Blehm in 1953 in Russell.  He preceded her in death on November 30, 1998.

 

During WWII time, Mae lived in Wichita and worked at the Cessna Aircraft Company.  After the war, Mae and Herbert moved to Dorrance where she worked at the Dorrance School as a cook for 19 years, retiring in 1988.  She also was a seamstress for Kesler Cleaners in Russell and cleaned homes.

 

Mae is a member of the First Lutheran Church of Dorrance.  She was a founding member of 50 years of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Dorrance.  She enjoyed doing yard work, tending her flower garden, quilting, sewing and crocheting.

 

Surviving family include two sons, Wilbur Crabb and wife Darlene of Keats, Kansas and Robert Blehm and wife Grace of Russell; sister, Elsie “Toni” Bryant of Golden, Colorado; six grandchildren, Todd Crabb, Laura Crabb, Judy Zentz, Sue Grayson, Andrea Blehm and Alisha Steinert; 15 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandchild, two great grandchildren, two brothers Michael Steponick and Alex Steponick, and sister Olga Resig.

 

Celebration of Mayme’s Life will be held at 2:30 P.M. Thursday, April 9, 2009 at the First Lutheran Church of Dorrance with Sister Diane Wagner officiating.  Burial will follow at the Dorrance Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM on Wednesday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM.  A memorial has been established with the First Lutheran Church of Dorrance.  Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary who is in charge of these arrangements.  Condolences may also be sent via email at www.pvpmortuary.com.
