Larry G. Vaughan, 57 of Russell, died on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays.  Larry was born on November 25, 1951 in Manteno, Illinois the son of Arnold S. and Maxine (Toops) Vaughan

Larry grew up in the Osawatomie, Kansas area for most of his childhood.  In 1967 his family moved to Ottawa, Kansas and in 1970 he graduated from Ottawa High School.  As a young man, he owned and operated a drywall company in Larned, Jetmore and Great Bend areas.  In 1979 he moved to Russell and went to work for the City of Russell.  In January 1980 he was promoted to a water and sewer maintenance man and in July that same year he accepted a position with the Russell Police Department as a Patrolman.  A couple of years later, in 1982, he was promoted to a Patrolman II and in 1985 he accepted another promotion to Police Sergeant.  In January of 1988 he was promoted to Administrative/Patrol Sergeant and later that year he accepted the position of Police Captain.  Eleven years later on December 2, 1999 he was appointed to his current position as the City of Russell Chief of Police.  He was a member of the Lee Turner Lecture Series Advisory Board, Central Kansas Communications Advisory Board, Chairman of the Russell County Community Partnership Board a life member of the NRA and a member of Ducks Unlimited.  He enjoyed Archery as a hobby and loved being in the outdoors.  He loved hunting and fishing and when he was not working and had nothing else to do; you could usually find him hunting or fishing.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving family include his companion Dot Tammen of the home, daughter Karrie Rutherford of North Highland, California, stepsons Troy Tammen and wife Vickie of Russell and Travis Tammen and wife Christina of Great Bend, KS; brothers Gary Vaughan and wife Terry of Claflin, KS and Bruce Vaughan and wife Beverly of Hutchinson, KS; grandchildren Trevor, Lillian and Camden; step grandchildren Monica, Tami, Travis and Katelynn; 5 Nephews and Nieces.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Larry’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at St. Mary Queen of Angel Catholic Church with Father Charles Steier officiating.  Police Honor Guard Rites will be conducted at the Russell City Cemetery following the services.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Friday, April 17, 2009 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.  Memorials may be given to the National Rifle Association or the Catch A Dream Foundation.  Memorials, cards and condolences may be sent to the mortuary.  Condolences may be sent via email by going to www.pvpmortuary.com.
