Rocena (McCabe) Ulrich, 81, of Russell, Kansas died on Sunday, April 26, 2009 at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell.  She was born on 1927 in Coffeyville, Kansas, the daughter of Lester Laffette and Ella Irvin (Penn) McCabe.

 

The first few years of Rocena’s life was spent in the Coffeyville area, later she moved to Bunker Hill, Kansas.  She graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1945.  She met and fell in love with Dean Ulrich and they were united in marriage on April 16, 1945 and from this union they were blessed with a son Patrick.  The family moved around some and lived in Hinesville, Georgia, Pratt, Kansas and Russell, Kansas.  While living in Georgia, Rocena worked as a bookkeeper at Fort Stewart Army Base in Georgia and she worked several years as a bookkeeper and secretary for John O. Farmer. Rocena enjoyed being retired and spending time with her husband.  She also enjoyed reading, fishing with family and loved animals, especially her dogs Tao and Jade.  She was an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church of Russell. 

 

Surviving family include a son Patrick Ulrich and wife Elaine of San Diego, California; brother Edmund McCabe of Hays, Kansas and sister JoElla Patterson of Hinesville, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews. 

 

Those preceding her in death were her parents, four brothers, Lester, Bartell, Raymond, Irvin McCabe and husband Dean.

 

Celebration of Rocena’s Life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating.  Interment will follow at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, with the family present to greet friends from 7PM to 8 PM Thursday evening.  Memorials have been established with St. John Lutheran Church.  Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary who is in charge of these arrangements.  Condolences may also be sent via email at www.pvpmortuary.com.
