Clarice L. (Metz) Walters, 77 of Russell died Monday, June 15, 2009 at the Russell Regional Hospital.  Clarice was born December 28, 1931 in Marshall, Missouri, the daughter of Earl C. and Hazel D. (Duncan) Metz.  She grew up in Slater, Missouri and graduated from Slater High School in 1949.  She attended one year at the Central Missouri College in Fayette, Missouri.

 

Clarice was united in marriage to William R. Walters on August 16, 1953 in Slater.  This union was blessed with four children; Robert, Clay, Matthew and Phoebe Ann.  Bill and Clarice moved to Russell after the wedding.

 

She was a devoted wife and homemaker.  She helped Bill at the Russell Automotive Supply store.  She was the director of the Deines Cultural Center during the 1990’s and she played the organ at the First Congregational Church of Russell.

 

She was a member of the First Congregational Church.  She loved playing bridge, cooking, dancing, and especially shopping for shoes.

 

Surviving family include three sons, Robert Walters and wife LuAnn of Russell, KS, Clay Walters and wife Michelle of Topeka, KS, and Matthew Walters and wife Megan of Manhattan, KS; daughter, Phoebe Ann Rortina and husband Mike of Culver, KS; brother, Earl D. Metz of Wichita, KS; three grandchildren, Luke Walters, Steven Walters and Tristan Walters; three step grandchildren, Kayla Jones, Alyssa Perry and Kiara Perry; and one great grandson, Willem Atticus Walters.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Bill on August 5, 2007.

 

Celebration of Clarice’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, June 25, 2009 at the First Congregational Church of Russell, with Pastor Henry Hartman officiating.  Cremation has preceded the services.  Friends may sign the book from 9 AM to 8 PM Wednesday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM.  Memorials have been established with the Russell Public Library or the Trinity United Methodist Church Roof Fund.  Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary who is in charge of these arrangements.
