Barbara J. (Haage) Ruggels, 79 of Russell and formerly of Natoma died Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Russell Regional Hospital of Russell, Kansas.  Barbara was born March 29, 1930 in Old Bagnell, Missouri, the daughter of George F. and Dorothy L. (Robinson) Haage.  She grew up in Montevallo, Missouri and Pittsburg, Kansas.  She graduated from Pittsburg High School.  She also graduated from the Kansas City General Hospital School of Nursing.

 

Barbara was united in marriage to William Hale Long on January 25, 1963 in Kansas City, Missouri.  This union was blessed with one daughter, Grace.  William preceded her in death on November 9, 1965.  She was united in marriage to Frank LeRoy Ruggles on December 15, 1967 in Kansas City, Missouri.  This union was blessed with one daughter, Tamra Maria.  Frank preceded her in death on September 9, 1984.

 

Barbara was a devoted mother and homemaker.  She also was a nurse in Kansas City and Wichita.  She moved to Natoma in 1967 and became active in the United National Bank with Frank as an owner and board member.  In the early 1990’s she moved to Russell to be closer to her daughter.

 

She was a member of the Natoma United Methodist Church, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Natoma American Legion and the Order of the Eastern Star.  She enjoyed spending time in her garden and was known for her cooking, embroidery and cut work.

 

Surviving family includes her daughter, Grace Blehm and husband Robert of Russell; two brothers, George Haage of Everett, Washington and Phillip R. Haage of Paris, Texas; four sisters, Judith Rentschler of Lake Ozarks, Missouri, Eleanor Haage of Neveda, Missouri, Margaret Slone of St. Francisville, Louisiana and Carol Deveney of St. Charles, Missouri; two grandchildren, Andrea Blehm and Alisha Steinert; and two great grandchildren, Tanner Rexwinkle and Solomon Moreland.  She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Tamra Maria and brother Charles Haage.

Celebration of Barbara’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 20, 2009 at the Natoma United Methodist Church.  Interment will follow at the Natoma City Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Friday, June 19 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM.  A memorial has been established with the Natoma United Methodist Church.  Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, who is in charge of these arrangements.
