Addie Voncile “Von” (Spencer) Strecker, 78 of Rose Hill, Kansas and formerly of Russell, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at Lake Point Nursing Center in Rose Hill.  Voncile was born March 7, 1931 in Sayre, Oklahoma, the daughter of John Silas and Bertha Spencer.  Her earlier childhood was spent with her parents at Gladewater, Texas and she attended the first seven grades of school there.  Her parents moved to Kansas just north of the Barton County line on an oil lease in 1943 where she attended Mt. Strecker.  Her family moved to Russell in 1947 in order for Von to attend Russell High School.  After graduation in 1949, she got a job at Duckwalls working there 4 years, then 4 years for Humburg Gas and Appliance and over 4 years for Sierra Petroleum Co.  She then began a successful business in her home of garment making and alterations lasting 35 years.

On October 9, 1949 she married Lawrence Lester Strecker at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger, Kansas.  Two tornados struck Russell that day, interfering with the wedding celebration.  This union was blessed with two sons, Kevin and Scott.  Von was a devoted mother anxious to help her children reach the goals they set in life.

Voncile was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith.  She was very active in the work of the church, teaching Sunday school for over 39 years, holding offices in the Women’s Circle and sang in the choir.  She was a member of the V.F.W. Post #6240 Auxiliary.

Surviving family include her husband Lawrence of Rose Hill; son, Kevin Strecker and wife Rita of Arkansas City, and their children Austin, Alexis, Jael, and Chloe; son, Scott Strecker and wife Alison of Mulvane and their children Sammy and Abby; brother, Dillard Spencer and wife Dee of Owasso, Oklahoma; niece Sylvia Berner of Paola and her daughters Jessica, Lindsay, Sarah and Brianna.

Celebration of Voncile’s Life will be held at 3:00 P.M., Monday, August 17th, 2009 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.  Interment will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to service time Monday, with the family present to greet friends from 1 PM to service time.  A memorial has been established with the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.  Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, who is in charge of these arrangements.
