Clarence A. Hertel, 87 of Russell died September 20, 2009 at Pleasant View Home in Inman, Kansas.  Clarence was born March 27, 1922 in Munjor, Kansas the son of Peter and Amelia (Sanders) Hertel.  He grew up in Munjor and attended school there.

 

Clarence served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII.  He was stationed in North Africa and was a machine gunner and cannoneer.  Clarence was united in marriage to Helen Brungardt on April 8, 1948 in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays.  This union was blessed with three sons; Brian, Dennis and Joseph.  Clarence was a mechanic in the oilfield and also a pulling unit operator.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Russell and was a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus.  He also belonged to the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240.  Clarence enjoyed working on cars, lawnmowers and spending time at his favorite fishing hole.

 

Surviving family include his wife of 61 years, Helen of the home; sons, Brian Hertel and wife Debbie of Emporia, Kansas and Dennis Hertel and wife Debbie of Wichita, Kansas; two brothers, Elmer Hertel and Albinus Hertel both of Hays, Kansas; and three grandchildren, Brandi (Hertel) Sheldon, Megan Hertel and Erin (Hertel) Jager.  He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Joseph, and two brothers, William Hertel and Virgil Hertel. 

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10 A.M. Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church of Russell.  Interment will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell with the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard conducting Military Rites.  A Vigil will be held at 7 PM Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to 5 PM Tuesday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.  A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.  Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.  Condolences may also be sent via email at www.pvpmortuary.com.
