Doris Louise Buehler, 88 of Russell, died on Friday, December 25, 2009 at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell.

Doris was born May 28, 1921, to Herman and Louise (Nienke) Schwerdtfeger at a farm house in north Ellsworth County, Kansas.

Doris grew up on the farm, helping her folks, uncles and aunts with the chores and harvest. After eighth grade graduation, Doris worked at the Ellsworth hospital as an aid. Doris and her sister, Emma, moved to Wichita where Doris worked for BOEING at the first aid station.  Doris met Ted Buehler at the Ellsworth skating rink. They were united in marriage on July 30, 1943, at St. Paul Lutheran Church North Ellsworth, just before Ted was shipped overseas with the army.  From this union they were blessed with two daughters Pat and Cindy.  After Ted was discharged from the army, Doris and Ted moved to Russell, Kansas in the rural Pioneer neighborhood, south of Russell, and Ted went to work for the oil companies.  Doris was a homemaker, belonged to the neighborhood club and was a sewing leader in the 4-H club. She enjoyed activities at the school, the church and with her family such as square dancing and sewing.  Doris and Ted also enjoyed gardening, attending reunions with Ted’s 501 PIRA and traveling across country especially California and Arizona.  Later, Doris and Ted move to Plainville for almost 20 years. While in Plainville, Doris worked at the drug store and made many types of malt for the high school kids. They moved back to Russell in 1976 and both retired in 1985.

Doris is survived by her husband Ted of the home; daughter Pat Sunderland and husband Linn of Beatrice, Nebraska; grandson Greg Sunderland and wife Sara of Albany, California; two great-grandchildren, Slater and Zoe Sunderland; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Cindy in 1973: five brothers and one sister.

A celebration of Doris’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating.  Burial will follow at the Wilson Cemetery in Wilson, KS.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Monday, December 28, 2009 at the mortuary with the family present from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Monday evening.  Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church North Ellsworth and sent in care of the mortuary.  Condolences may be sent via email by going to www.pvpmortuary.com.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
