Helen Louise Stickney, 90 of Russell and formerly of Dorrance died Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell, Kansas.

 

Helen was born September 9, 1919 in Ellsworth County, the daughter of Carl and Carrie (Cook) Kaufman.  She grew up south of Dorrance and attended country schools.

 

Helen was united in marriage to Judson William Stickney on May 14, 1938 in St. John, Kansas.  This union was blessed with two children, Roger and Ronda.  Judson preceded her in death in 1967.

 

Helen was a devoted mother and homemaker.  She also worked at EL-KAN Manufacturing and at the Wilson Nursing Home.  Helen lived most of her life in the Dorrance area before moving to Russell in 2000 to be closer to her family.

 

Helen was a member of the Wilson United Methodist Church.  She was known for her angel food cakes and homemade noodles.  She enjoyed baking, sewing, growing violets and spending time with her family.

 

Surviving family include her daughter, Ronda Pasek of Russell, Kansas; four sisters, Leona Champion of San Jose, California, Carol Herber and LaFern Prediger both of Salina, Kansas and Dorothy Bay of Russell, Kansas; granddaughter, Michele McNelis; great granddaughter, Lainey Krayca; and sister-in-laws, Lois Kaufman of Galva, Kansas and Nelva Boxberger of Russell, Kansas. 

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Roger Stickney, two brothers Lloyd Kaufman and Orville Kaufman, and her dog Arthur.

 

Celebration of Helen’s Life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.  A private interment will follow the service.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Monday, January 18, 2010 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.  A memorial has been established as the Helen Stickney Memorial Fund.  Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary who is in charge of these arrangements.
