Ruth Elizabeth (Flippo) Haffa, 83 of Russell died Monday morning, March 15, 2010 at Main Street Manor in Russell, Kansas.
Elizabeth was born August 6, 1924 in Abilene, Kansas the daughter of Byron Ray and Eva A. (Danford) Flippo. She grew up on the family farm East of Abilene and graduated from Dickenson County Community High School in 1942 as Salutitorian. She attended Kansas State University where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in English and Speech in 1947.
Elizabeth was united in marriage to Dean Arthur Haffa on October 17, 1948 in Abilene. This union was blessed with two children; Catherine and Richard. They made their home on a farm near Abilene until 1970. They moved to Topeka, Kansas for a few years and then to Colby, Kansas. They moved to the Russell area in 1986. Dean preceded her in death on July 25, 2009.
Elizabeth was a devoted wife and homemaker. She taught school for three years; one year in Minneapolis and two years in a one room schoolhouse near their farm.
Elizabeth was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church of Russell and the United Methodist Women. She also was a “Pink Lady” at the Colby Hospital. She loved music, singing, being in the choir, a good book, spending time in the garden and with her grandchildren.
Surviving family include her daughter, Catherine Elliott and husband Richard of Waldo, Kansas and son, Richard Haffa and wife Sheryl of Goddard, Kansas; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Forest Flippo and sister Esther Mills.
Celebration of Elizabeth’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Otterbein United Methodist Church of Russell with Rev. Earl Haggard officiating. Interment will follow at Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at the mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM. A memorial has been established with the Wycliffe Bible Translator. Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of the mortuary. Condolences may also be sent via email at www.pvpmortuary.com.
