Vera Mae (Prediger) Wanek, 85 of Russell, died Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

 

Vera was born on August 4, 1924 in Dorrance, Kansas the daughter of Reinhardt and Elsie (Kaps) Prediger.  She grew up on a farm south of Dorrance.  In the 8th grade, Vera and her family moved into Dorrance.  Vera graduated from Dorrance High School and was the class Valedictorian.

 

Vera was united in marriage to Junior Franklin Wanek on September 13, 1947 in Dorrance.  This union was blessed with a daughter Linda.  Vera and Junior made their home in Russell.

 

Vera worked at Home State Bank as a teller.  She was a devoted homemaker after Linda was born.  Vera worked in the cafeteria at Simpson and Bickerdyke when Linda was attending school.  After Linda left home, Vera returned to Home State Bank and worked there as a teller until her retirement.

 

Vera was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Russell and the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Ladies Auxiliary.  She loved shopping, traveling, bowling and spending time with family and friends.

 

Surviving family include her husband of 62 years, Junior of the home; daughter, Linda Wanek and husband Denis Bauke of San Francisco, California; and two grandchildren, Molli Bauke and Zachary Bauke.  She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Gerald Prediger.

 

Celebration of Vera’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, March 22, 2010 at St. John Lutheran Church of Russell with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating.  Interment will follow at the Dorrance City Cemetery.  Visitation will be Sunday, March 21, 2010 from Noon to 8 PM at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.  Memorials have been established with St. John Lutheran Church or the Russell V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.  Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary who is in charge of these arrangements.  Condolences may also be sent via email at www.pvpmortuary.com.
