Jacob Philip Wahl, 96, of Victoria died on Monday, April 19, 2010 at the St. Johns Health Care Center of Victoria, Kansas.

Jacob, who was better known by his family and friends as Philip, was born on December 12, 1913, in Hays, Kansas the son of Jacob and Anna Margaret (Hauschild) Wahl.  He grew up on the family farm south of Gorham, Kansas and graduated from Hays High School in 1930.  After high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1942, fighting in Karachi, India during World War II.  After the war he came back to the family farm located in the Big Creek Township area in Russell County.  Philip had a close and special relationship with his brother Alvin.  They both loved working on the farm so it only made sense for the two of them to go into business together.  For almost 60 years the two brothers worked many long exhausting days side by side running the family farm.  Philip was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and is a long time member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hays.  He was very honored to serve his country during the war and was a proud longtime member of the Russell, Kansas V.F.W. Post #6240.  In his spare time Philip enjoyed reading, writing letters to family and friends, attending military reunions and spending time with his family, including his many nieces and nephews.  You can truly say that most of all Philip loved nothing more than working long hours on the tractor tilling the soil and harvesting the grain.

Surviving family include his brothers Earl Wahl of Midland, Michigan, Alvin Wahl of St. Johns Health Care Center in Victoria, Kansas and Dean Wahl of Mesa Arizona; sisters Norma Strecker and husband Paul of Olmitz, Kansas and Caroline Peterson of Clifton, Kansas as well as many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Philip’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hays with Pastor Lesley Radius Officiating.  Burial will follow at the Mount Allen Cemetery in Hays, Kansas.  Visitation will be 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Friday, April 23, 2010 at the mortuary with family present from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Friday evening.  Memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hays or St. John's Health Care Center in Victoria and sent in care of the mortuary.  Condolences may be sent via email by going to www.pvpmortuary.com.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Philip purchased this tractor after returning home from World War II.  He had saved up enough money from his monthly Army pay, during the war, to purchase a new tractor.
